The Future Of Automobiles???

Okay, if you actually like this car - okay, it just shows that we (you and I) are different. I've seen these around for a while, but today on a 50 mile trip I saw about 3 of them. I don't know what people see in them? To me, it looks like the 'designer' was a 6 year old kid. To me, it's not even ugly enough to be cute, it's just plain ugly.

Now I will grant you that I've never ridden in one; and short of some friend having one and riding with him, I'm not likely to. To me, this car just has no style - well, until compared to something 'new' from Europe.

I'm guessing the numbers on the side make it go fasterPosted by Hello

Comments, opinions are welcome - heck if anyone has had any experience with either of these vehicles, tell us what you think.

The Scion looks like a refrigerator box on wheels.

Yuck! Those are just plain ugly! They're only one step away from putting a cardboard box on a bicycle. They kind of remind me of the little play cars we used to have that we had to pedal.

I see these "hybrid" cars all the time and I constantly ask myself "What are these design teams thinking?". My personal opinion: The manufacturers have been harrassed by the eco-nazis long enough that they've finally decided to get back at them... "Fine! we'll give you a car that runs on soybeans, but you're gonna be driving the ugliest cars in the world!".
Oh... BTW... #99 could probably fit into my trunk. Who needs a spare tire when I can have a spare car.
I'm still waiting for all of the clowns to pop out of it.

I saw a ton of those driving in the NorthEast last summer. Damn ugly. I agree with M+ -- I'd love to have one of the 99 cars to carry around as a "spare."

... I'll stick with my Wrangler, thank-you-very-much.

I know nothing of the Scion, but the "99" one is called a "Smart" car and has been used very effectively as a marketing tool.

Companies buy them for their field sales reps and paint them in their corporate colors, making them very noticable out on the road (and very easy to park!!!).

One radio station here in Dublin Ireland has four of them and they drive around the city in a convoy.

They retail around €14,000, which is about $18,000.

I saw a lot of those smart cars in France and even though they were able to park anywhere, and drive on the sidewalks, I would only trust using them to drive around inside my house as they seem to be rolling death traps.

Ok, your gonna laugh and I am probably inviting the derision of all, but first, my husband really thinks the prion (name right?) are cute, in a homely sort of way. I don't know, I think the HOnda element is uglier. The other one, looks odd but if it is a hybrid, if I had the money I wouldn't mind getting one, perhaps not that one but another of the hybrids. Gas is getting so outrageous, it would be nice not to be so dependent on a market that will probably resemble Europe's in a few years. That's fine for Europe but the US is so spread out, having gas spiraling up is a disaster in the making. Assuming that there are wide spread outlets to plug them into (or can you get some kind of adapter to use another type of outlet)? I don't know much about them so I'm probably talking out my ear. As to the styling, it's all what you're used to I think. We are creatures of habit.

I think the second one is rather cute. Japan has lots of those mini cars, not enough space for big ones. :)
